Why Volunteer?

Hospice volunteers both give and receive many benefits from joining our program...

  • Volunteers set their own level of commitment based on their available time.
As a full member of the hospice team, volunteers help by providing care and compassion to the patient and family, often forming close personal ties with both.
  • Office volunteers, by performing a variety of non-clinical work, enable the hospice professionals to focus their efforts on patient care.
  • Volunteers experience feelings of satisfaction from making a difference in people's lives and develop greater self-knowledge from insights gained through the relationships with patients, their families, and staff members.

It is important that Hospice By The Sea volunteers be...

  • Caring - We focus on how best to meet the needs of patients and family members.
  • Emotionally Mature - Working with patients in a hospice setting can be an intense experience.
  • Comfortable Talking about Death and Dying - Hospice staff approach death and dying in an open, direct, and practical way.
  • Committed - Volunteers are as dedicated to their work as other healthcare professionals.

It is recommended that anyone interested in becoming a patient care volunteer and has experienced a recent loss must wait about one year before working with patients. This guideline does not apply to non-patient care volunteers.
