What Volunteer Opportunities Are Available?

Patient Care in the Community: Patients, who are at home, in nursing homes, in assisted living facilities often need someone to sit quietly with them, read to them, and provide companionship (from simple conversations to exploring deep feelings). Volunteers run errands, provide caregivers respite, serve as emotional support to the patient and family, become the eyes and ears of the hospice team.

Patient Care in the Hospice Care Center: Hospice By The Sea has two inpatient facilities located in Boca Raton and Hollywood. Volunteers work with patients, families and staff by reading or sitting with a patient, answering call buttons, assisting with ice water or helping feed patients, being available to lend support when needed.

Administrative/Clerical: Volunteers assist Hospice departments by carrying out a variety of office functions such as mailings, assembling packets with literature and documents, data entry, faxing, telephoning, and filing. Volunteers' duties are based on their skills and interests.

Thrift Shop: Volunteers assist staff by displaying quality merchandise, assisting customers, pricing items, and assisting the cashier. Our Hospice By The Sea Chest Thirft Shop is open weekdays and on Saturdays.

Bistro: Volunteers help with cash register, greeting patients and visitors, and stocking supplies between the hours of 10am and 3pm.

Front Desk at Hospice Care Center: Volunteers greet families and friends of patients as they enter, answer basic questions, and provide directions.

Teen Program : Teenagers from 14-18 years old satisfy their community service requirements by assisting with administrative functions or working in our Thrift Shop. Summer hours are available.

Community Relations: Volunteers assist in planning, organizing, and staffing special health fairs/expos, public speaking, and assisting in events during the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons. Volunteers are needed to hand address the numerous "In Memory" and "In Honor" acknowledgements received by the donations area of Community Relations, especially during the exceptionally busy season of November 1st to May 1st.

CareForce: Fundraising group volunteers are responsible for raising thousands of dollars which go directly to patient care programs through organization of several fundraising events. CareForce meetings are generally held in the evenings.

Executive Volunteers: Volunteers who have management and leadership experience are given more complex responsibilities as project leaders in marketing, event planning, volunteer recruitment, training and supervision, as well as organizational and systems improvements. You will work closely with the hospice staff in your specific area of expertise.

Pet Visit Volunteer: Volunteers visit our hospice patients with their special dogs.
