Advancing Strategies to Improve Access to High Quality End-of-Life Care
for African-Americans in Palm Beach and Broward Counties

The Initiative to Improve Palliative Care for African-Americans (IIPCA) is a national, grassroots movement to promote improved care for terminally ill African-Americans. Hospice By The Sea has recently become a partner in the IIPCA.

Our “Opening Doors” initiative is an educational outreach within the African-American community designed to improve the understanding of and access to quality end-of-life hospice and palliative care. The goal of our project is to educate African-Americans about the benefits of hospice and palliative care through a series of presentations and active involvement within the African-American community.

Janice Fulmore-Tigner, Hospice by the Sea’s African American Community Outreach Coordinator for Broward County, is increasing the knowledge and philosophy of our services in the African American community. She is currently involved with several organizations such as Broward Ministerial Alliances (2 local chapters), Riviera Beach Coalition Council, The Mango Festival of Deerfield Beach (a 3-day cultural Festival), Angel Ministries (Palm Beach & Broward County), and with other local churches and city health expos, fairs and events.

Saunda Washington is Hospice by the Sea's African American Community Outreach Coordinator for Palm Beach County. Saundra has a special connection with many churches and local organizations in Palm Beach County.
